2019 – Last year’s festival was truly an incredible lineup with Lakecia Benjamin (USA) and Veronic Swift (USA) both having multiple shows over the festival period. Alongside these two young American jazz stars there was also Australian jazz legend Wilma Reading who has played with the likes of Duke Ellington, Oscar Peterson and Ray Brown. Other artists included Brazilian singer/songwriter Anna Setton, Canadian saxophonist Chelsea McBride and Armenian Jazz pianist Zela Margossian.
2018 – For this year our headline artist was the exciting vocalist Charenee Wade (USA) who, accompanied by her long time collaborator, pianist Oscar Perez, made her debut Australian appearance to perform her celebrated tribute to the late singer/poet Gil Scott Heron. In addition to Charenee, the festival featured the inaugural Australian performance of much loved Finn, Sanna Ruohoniemi (FI). Gian Slater also performed with Andrea Keller and Vince Jones in Andrea’s
concept work “Still Night”.
2017 – This year we had the legendary Terri Lyne Carrington (USA) take to the stage in a truly all-star festival lineup. Alongside Terri the festival also featured Silke Eberhard (GER), Nadje Noordhuis (USA), Jen Shyu (USA), Zela Margossion (AM) and local legends Sandy Evans and Andrea Keller.
2016 – The Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival was proud to welcome the Melissa Aldana Trio (Chile/USA), which marked their first ever Australian tour, with their festival slot being their first stop. Also premiering were acclaimed jazz stars Ingrid and Christine Jensen (CAN/US) who collaborated with the 10-piece Sydney Women’s Jazz Collective (now Pharos) as well as the Mike Nock Trio to create a truly incredible performance.
2015 – For 2015 there was a truly eclectic roster of artists with internationals from Canada, Cuba and the United States. Jane Bunnett and Maqueque rejoiced with the rhythms and vitality of Canada and Cuba while Mimi Jones and Camille Thurman demonstrated what the new generation of artists on the New York scene have been working on and developing in the modern era. Mimi and Camille, made the trip to Australia to perform exclusively for the Festival, and blended all types of modern music from post-bop, to modern jazz, soul R&B and gospel.
2014 – For this year we had the great pleasure to have Dee Alexander to our shores for her exclusive Australian debut while also welcoming back Lisa Parrott and Sarah McKenzie, wonderful examples of the strength of Australian artists who now reside in the US. Plus local talent from Hannah James, influences from Cuba with Gai Bryant’s big band and the incredible Ellen Kirkwood.
2013 – This year we had three guests from overseas, the Eri Yamamoto Trio (JAP), baritone saxophonist Claire Daly (USA) and saxophonist FrØy Aagre (NOR) alongside wonderful Australian artists such as Judy Bailey, Shannon Barnett and Gian Slater.
2012 – For the inaugural year of the Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival we saw an incredible and diverse lineup of musicians from France, Germany, the United States and Australia. Some of these included Trio M (USA), No Tango (GER) and Cyrille Aimee (FR/USA) which all drew on a wide range of musical traditions to create a personal, engaging and unforgettable first festival.
