2019’s Jann Rutherford Memorial Award recipient Hilary Geddes is a modern jazz guitarist, splitting time between First Class Honours at the Conservatorium and raising hell in her indie rock outfit Buoy.

This year, we are thrilled to showcase 2019 Jann Rutherford Memorial Award recipient, guitarist Hilary Geddes. Inspired by AC/DC’s Angus Young and Murray from the Wiggles, Geddes began playing guitar as a child in her home town of Griffith in regional NSW. Since then, her musical tastes have remained just as eclectic, if not more expansive, ranging from the likes of Carla Bley to Big Mama Thornton. Geddes spent a year living and studying at the Hochschule für Künste in Germany before graduating from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with First Class Honours, studying under Carl Dewhurst and James Muller. In addition to sharing the stage with greats such as Mike Nock and Barney McAll, Geddes is also a member of garage rock band The Buoys, who recently finished a Triple J endorsed national tour supporting DZ Deathrays. Geddes’ JRMA award will allow her to record and release her debut album.
